New Leader for North East Trees
July 15, 2024 - North East Trees, the Los Angeles-based environmental non-profit, announced that it has selected Carlos Moran to be its new Executive Director. Effective August 19th, he will take the reins from Interim E. D. Janet Schulman, who has guided NET since late 2022.
“We are thrilled that Carlos Moran is joining North East Trees at this critical juncture in environmental justice,” said Board President Michael X. Ferraro. “The breadth of his work and lived experiences make him not only the ideal leader for our organization, but a powerful, visionary voice for growth in the urban greening conversation. Carlos cares deeply about nature, and he cares deeply about people. After a nation-wide search which yielded many excellent candidates, we are fortunate that Carlos has decided to become the captain of our team.”
“I am incredibly honored and excited to join North East Trees as the new Executive Director,” said Moran. “Together with the dedicated staff, board and our invaluable partners, I look forward to continuing the impactful work of building climate resiliency and fostering greener, healthier communities across Los Angeles.”
Moran comes to NET from the Council for Watershed Health, where he was Senior Program Manager. Prior to that, he was the Senior Director of Impact at Tree People. He holds an MSW in Social Work from USC, and bachelor’s degrees in Chicano Studies and Child Development from Cal State Northridge. For the past 12 years, he’s been an adjunct assistant professor at USC’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work.
“North East Trees has a rich history of transforming neighborhoods,” said Moran. “I am honored to build on this legacy and lead the organization in healing environmental injustice and empowering workforce development. I am confident in our collective ability to make a meaningful and long-lasting difference.”
Mr. Moran’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all Angelenos is revealed in the wide array of volunteer appointments and positions he holds and has held: *California Ocean Protection Council, Environmental Justice Advisory Board; * UCLA and California State Water Resources Control Board, Wastewater Needs Assessment Advisory Group; * Rose Fndtn., California Environmental Grassroots Funding Board; L.A. Center for Urban Natural Resources Sustainability, Executive Oversight Committee; * LA County Safe Clean Water Program, Watershed Area Steering Committee Member; *Oakwood School, Board of Trustees; * Pathways Community Charter High School, Board of Directors.
The nationwide search was led by Koya Partners, with the Selection Committee consisting of NET Board members Michael X. Ferraro, Chloé Renée Ziegler (VP), Sarah Ragatz (Secretary) and Osvaldo Peña.
